What is a Technopark?
Technoparks are defined as special zones where universities, research centers, and industrial organizations work in collaboration, develop information and technology, enable the emergence of innovative products, and at the same time support the entrepreneurship ecosystem. Technoparks are places where technology-based companies come together, support research and development (R&D) activities, and operate as centers of innovation. The world's first technopark is known as Stanford Research Park, established under the leadership of Stanford University in the state of California, USA. This technopark pioneered the formation of Silicon Valley, becoming a center of technological innovations worldwide. Today, there are more than 1,000 technoparks globally, and this number is increasing.
The USA and European countries have played a pioneering role in the development of technoparks. Especially Germany, the United Kingdom, France, and Scandinavian countries host world-renowned technoparks that work in collaboration with universities. Munich Technology Park in Germany and Cambridge Science Park in the UK are considered successful examples in this field.
In Asia, especially countries like China, South Korea, Japan, and India have accelerated their technopark investments and established regional innovation centers. Zhongguancun Science Park in China is known as the center of technology giants, while the city of Bangalore in India is referred to as the "Silicon Valley of India."
In Turkey, technoparks have rapidly proliferated since the early 2000s. Technoparks established all over the country aim to increase Turkey's technology development capacity by supporting R&D and innovation activities. Istanbul Technopark, METU Technopolis, and Bilkent Cyberpark are among Turkey's leading technoparks.
